We built the notebook we couldn't find.

We spent years watching people study hard and retain little. Not because they weren't trying — but because the tools they were using weren't built around how the brain encodes and retrieves information. Highlighters, re-reading, passive review. None of it works the way people think it does.

The research on this has been clear for decades. Retrieval practice, spaced repetition, and the generation effect — writing something in your own words — are the most reliable methods for durable learning. But most notebooks don't reflect any of that. They're just blank pages.

We considered it. The honest answer is that handwriting engages the brain differently than typing. When you write by hand, you can't keep up verbatim — so you're forced to process, compress, and restate. That constraint is a feature, not a limitation.

There's also something more straightforward: apps are built to retain users. We wanted to build something that helps you retain knowledge. Those are different goals, and they produce different products.

We never took outside investment. That means we've never had a board telling us to add a dashboard, gamify the experience, or lock features behind a paywall. The Encode Recall System is a notebook. It does what a notebook does — and it's structured to make every session count.

We sell it on Amazon. We don't track your sessions, analyze your habits, or send you push notifications. When you close it, it stays closed. That's the point.
